The exception is that I bring a Miller carbon and so light weight tripod.
I losty thta once since there was a similar tripod on the offloading belt at LA. I flwe in from Amsterdam and someone with an aluminum version of the Miller but with the same type of case flwe in frm Fuji and was swapped by accident. It took me 4 weeks to get mine back since the person that took mine would not believe it was swapped untill I told her to look in de side pocket of the tripod back. But you are right renting in some places would not be a problem.
